Influenza Immunisations

Each year, we run a comprehensive campaign of Influenza Immunisations.

We aim to complete as many patients as we can early in the campaign to give patients maximum protection.

Starting at the end of September each year, we give approximately 3,000 injections.

The groups we target are:

* Patients aged 65 years and over

* People with Ischaemic Heart Disease, Diabetes

* Chronic Liver or Kidney disease

* Asthma/Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

* Patients living in Nursing or Residential homes

* In addition, patients whose immunity is reduced such as those having chemotherapy or on high dose of steroids and other drugs.

It is generally advised, by the Department of Health that the 'worried well' do not need to receive annual Flu injections.

However, many employers, including the health sector, do offer the injections to their staff. This work is not covered by the NHS.

At the same time as the 'Flu injections' we also offer Pneumococcal vaccinations to those at risk. For most people this is a single injection, and is now offered routinely to everyone aged 65 years and above.

Pneumococcal Immunisations

We offer Pneumococcal Immunisations to patients at risk.

In particular, these are people aged 65 years or more
or those with:

* Ischaemic Heart Disease

* Diabetes Mellitus

* Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or severe Asthma,

* Chronic Liver Disease

* Chronic Kidney Disease

* People with immunosuppression

* Patients who have had their spleen removed

For most of these patients, a single injection is adequate. However, certain people do require boosters.

Travel Related Immunisations

We offer a comprehensive range of travel immunisations, including Yellow Fever.

Some are available on the NHS, several are not. For these a charge will be made, related to the cost of the vaccine and its administration. You will be informed of the charge before the injection is given.

For more unusual injections, we may need to order the vaccine.

Advice from travel agents does vary and often plays down the need for immunisations. We suggest that patients travelling abroad seek professional advice early, at least 6 weeks before travel if possible, to ensure any necesasary vaccines may be given in time. This is particularly important for long trips to several places, or for people planning trekking or other rough trip itineraries.

People sometimes get upset at the cost of non NHS vaccines, but in terms of cost of the overall holiday, it probably represents a small fraction of the total cost. Please remember it is your family and your own health you are protecting.
